Mali: ECOWAS representative accused of carrying out activities to destabilize the transition

The special representative of the Economic Community of West African States in Mali, Hamidou Boly, declared persona non grata by the Malian authorities, has been accused of carrying out activities to destabilize the transition.

“Hamidou Boly, special representative of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), carried out destabilization activities against the transition with individuals from civil society, political parties and media figures” a declared, Monday evening, the Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdoulaye Diop.

The Malian government, declared Monday morning, Hamidou Boly “persona non grata” in view of his “actions” incompatible with his status. “The person concerned is engaged with groups and individuals from civil society as well as from the political world or even from the world of the press and undertakes activities hostile to the transition which do not correspond at all with his mission”, indicated Abdoulaye Diop , on national television.

According to Abdoulaye Diop, diplomats have an obligation of reserve and impartiality. “They must not interfere in the affairs of the country”, underlined the head of the Malian diplomacy. He specifies that before arriving at this stage, “the representative of ECOWAS received several warnings which were addressed to him, then to the ECOWAS Commission and even to the presidency in office. However, the person concerned continued to engage in activities which are incompatible with his mission, ”Diop noted.

“And as a sovereign country, we believe that at a certain moment, if this person does not understand the limits of his mission that he has exceeded, it is the duty of the authorities in place to assume”, indicated the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

And to add: “With ECOWAS, we wish to continue relations of good cooperation, solidarity with the various authorities. We ask ECOWAS to nominate another person who is aware of the limits of his mandate and we will be ready to work with this person to advance the agenda of our organization ”.

“We hope that he can leave in conditions of dignity, but we hope that at the end of this 72-hour period, he will no longer be able to be present on our territory”, concluded the Malian minister.

Hamidou Boly has been accredited in Mali since July 2019.
