If the Mahatma is finally awarded this Congressional Gold Medal, he will be the first Indian to receive this award. In Satyagraha, Mahatma Gandhi showed the way to non-violent movement. The philosophy he founded and the practice of nonviolent resistance later influenced many movements.
This gold medal of the US Congress has been received by many eminent persons before. Earlier, the award was received by George Washington, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa and Rosa Parks. However, no Indian has received this honor yet.
Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney said in this regard that the historic Satyagraha movement of Mahatma Gandhi has inspired the whole country and the whole world. The example of the Mahatma encourages each of us to work for the country. He described Gandhi’s Satyagraha movement as an example of a non-violent movement. In his words, the Mahatma has inspired multiple movements around the world. He cited Martin Luther King Jr.’s fight against apartheid as an example, and Nelson Mandela’s fight against apartheid as an example. Maloney said that the change that Gandhi was talking about, he said to bring in himself first. We should all move forward on that path.
