The President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales formally apologized after the great controversy generated by the kiss he gave to the player Jenni Hermosoduring the medal ceremony at the 2023 Australia and New Zealand Women’s Soccer World Cup award ceremony.
In a video shared by the RFEF, Rubiales said thatand “there is a fact that I have to regret and it is everything that has happened between a player and me, with a magnificent relationship between the two, as well as with others, and where, well, surely, I have been wrong”.
Rubiales assured that in “a moment of maximum effusiveness, without any bad intentions, without any bad faith, what happened happened, very spontaneously, without bad faith on either side.”.
The video of the kiss on the mouth of Rubiales to Jenni Hermoso went viral on social networks and even Members of the Spanish Government, such as the Minister of Equality Irene Montero, the Minister of Culture and Sports Miquel Iceta and the Minister of Defense Margarita Robles, demanded an explanation from the RFEF.
The president of the RFEF pointed out that he must “learn from this and understand that when you are president of an institution as important as the Federation, you have to be more careful, especially in ceremonies and in this type of matter.”
Referring to the statements he made this Sunday in response to the video, where he assured that the question of the kiss seemed “idiotic” to him, Rubiales said that within the RFEF “Nobody gave it the slightest importance, but outside they have given it.”
“I also want to apologize to these people, because I understand that if it has been seen differently from the outside, they will surely have their reasons,” said the top leader of Spanish football.
