The defensive line that Luis Enrique will line up against France this Sunday in the Nations League final will be examined by the intimidating trident confirmed by Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappé and Antoine Griezmann. One of the most common features of the Asturian coach’s stage at the helm of La Roja has been the granting of transitions to any of his rivals, be it a first-line team or a third-car team. The idea of the Spanish coach produces vertigo from the risk he takes playing with such an advanced defense. Centrals and laterals, when the opponents overcome the Spanish pressure, they are exposed to one-on-one situations in the worst possible scenario: the opposing attackers running towards them with a lot of space ahead. The stellar French trident can be found in San Siro with the ideal conditions to exploit that weakness of Spain. Except for Eric García, the defenders lined up by Luis Enrique have had direct experiences in their clubs against Mbappé, Benzema and Griezmann, but never against all three at the same time. To a greater or lesser extent, all have suffered from the scoring ability of the powerful shortlist of French forwards.
Aymeric Laporte. As an Athletic player he faced Benzema seven times, in which he scored six times. With Manchester City it has been measured in two games with the balance of one goal for the nine madridista. He has faced Griezmann eight times and he scored four goals, two with Real and another two with Atlético. He has only played once against Mbappé, two weeks ago at PSG-City (2-0), but the Parisian star did not score.
Íñigo Martínez. Benzema is one of his great nightmares, scoring 12 goals in the 17 games they have been face to face. Griezmann, meanwhile, has scored six goals in the 13 duels in which they have faced each other. Mbappé has never been measured.
Azpilicueta. He has faced Benzema four times, two with Osasuna (0 goals from the Frenchman) and two with Chelsea (1 goal). Against Griezmann he played two games in the group stage of the 2017 Champions League and the Frenchman scored a goal for Atlético at Stamford Bridge. Like Iñigo Martínez, he has not faced Mbappé either.
Marcos Alonso. Like Azpilicueta, he has only played once against Griezmann (1 goal). Neither Benzema nor Mbappé have been measured.
Pau Torres. With Griezmann he has suffered a lot, four goals from the Frenchman on the four occasions they have met. Benzema scored three goals in the four meetings in which they have met on the field.
Pedro Porro: Benzema scored five goals in the four times he has met. Against Griezmann he played four games and this one scored two goals. Mbappé has not been measured.
Reguilón. Two games against Benzema (1 goal) and against Griezmann (1). He has not faced Mbappé.
Eric Garcia. He has not faced any of the three.
