Actor Arun Govil, who played Lord Ram in the popular TV serial Ramayan, Dalit rights activist Chandrashekhar Azad and Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar of the erstwhile royal family are among the 280 members who have entered Parliament for the first time by winning the Lok Sabha elections. Former chief ministers, Rajya Sabha members, entrepreneurs and even a former high court judge have entered the 543-member lower house of Parliament by winning the recently concluded general elections. The number of first-time Lok Sabha members is 52 per cent of the total members.
Maximum 45 MPs reached Lok Sabha for the first time
Uttar Pradesh, the largest state sending 80 members to the Lok Sabha, has 45 members who have reached the Parliament for the first time. These include BJP’s Govil from Meerut seat, Congress’s Kishori Lal Sharma who defeated BJP’s Smriti Irani from Amethi and Azad Samaj Party’s Chandrashekhar Azad from Nagina seat.

The number of members reaching Parliament for the first time from Maharashtra is 33. These include school teacher Bhaskar Bhagre, who was fielded by NCP-Sharadchandra Pawar from the tribal seat of Dindori. Bhagre has defeated BJP leader and Union Minister Bharti Pawar. This time BJP has faced defeat in the Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra. BJP’s Piyush Goyal is also among the members elected for the first time from Maharashtra, who has been elected to the Lok Sabha from Mumbai North. Balwant Wankhede, who defeated BJP’s Navneet Rana from Amravati, Anoop Dhotre, son of former Union Minister Sanjay Dhotre from Akola and independent candidate Vishal Patil from Sangli have also been elected as Lok Sabha members for the first time. Some former chief ministers are also among the 280 members elected for the first time to the Lok Sabha.

These include Narayan Rane (Ratnagiri-Sindhudarg), Trivendra Singh Rawat (Haridwar), Manohar Lal Khattar (Karnal), Biplab Kumar Deb (Tripura West), Jitan Ram Manjhi (Gaya), Basavaraj Bommai (Haveri), Jagdish Shettar (Belgaum) and Charanjit Singh Channi (Jalandhar). Actors Suresh Gopi (Thrissur), Kangana Ranaut (Mandi), June Maliah (Medinipur), Sayani Ghosh (Jadhavpur) and Rachna Banerjee (Hooghly) will also enter the Lok Sabha for the first time. Rajya Sabha members Anil Desai (Shiv Sena UBT), Misa Bharti (RJD), Bhupendra Yadav, Dharmendra Pradhan, Mansukh Mandaviya and Purushottam Rupala (all BJP) have also reached the Lok Sabha. Members of the erstwhile royal families – Chhatrapati Shahu (Kolhapur), Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar (Mysore) and Kriti Devi Debbarman (Tripura East) – will enter the Lok Sabha for the first time.
Former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who won from Talmuk Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal, is also set to take oath as a first-time MP. Entrepreneur Uday Srinivas Tangela, also known as T Time Uday, has been elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time from Kakinada. Young members elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time include 25-year-old Shambhavi (LJP-RV-Samastipur), 26-year-old Sagar Khandre (Congress-Bidar), 27-year-old Priyanka Jarkiholi (Congress-Chikkodi), 26-year-old Sanjana Jatav (Congress-Bharatpur) and 31-year-old Rajkumar Roat (Bharatiya Adivasi Party-Banswara). Durai Vaiko (Tiruchirappalli), K N Arun Nehru (Perambalur), S Murasoli (Thanjavur), Eatala Rajinder (Malkajgiri), Ujjwal Raman Singh (Allahabad) and Yusuf Pathan (Baharampur) are also going to become Lok Sabha members for the first time by winning the elections.
