Libyan demonstrators in the capital, Tripoli, hoisted the Turkish flag, to strongly condemn the attack on the flag of a sister country in the eastern city of Tobruk.
Dozens of Libyans spontaneously gathered in Martyrs Square in central Tripoli on Friday evening in solidarity with Turkey and in protest against the outrage to its flag.
According to the correspondent of the Anadolu Agency, the demonstrators hoisted the Turkish flag alongside the Libyan flag.
Hussein Al-Tuwairi, one of the participants in the rally, told Anadolu Agency: “Today we raise the Turkish flag to respond to those who desecrated it.”
Al-Tuwairi praised Turkey’s foreign policy and its support for Arab-Islamic issues, adding that “Turkey took an honorable stand with Libya during the attack by Haftar’s militia on Tripoli, and with Palestine in the face of the attacks of the Israeli occupation “.
Protesters also held up banners condemning Haftar and his crimes, including, “Haftar is a war criminal”.
Haftar’s supporters attempted an act of provocation on Monday by placing Turkish flags on the road where the convoy of Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibeh was passing during his visit to Tobruk.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the incident, calling it “a heinous act” which targets the Turkish-Libyan brotherhood.
