Aarey is an area of Mumbai that is covered with lush green areas and is home to a variety of animals and birds.

In September last year, the Maharashtra government decided to reserve a 600-acre area in Aarey near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in suburban Mumbai as a forest and preserve the area.

The proposed car shed in Aarey sparked a bitter dispute between environmental activists and the then BJP-ruled Maharashtra government, which wanted to cut 2,700 trees to build the shed.

There have been several incidents of leopards entering apartments on the outskirts of Mumbai. Environmentalists have denied uncontrolled development in the habitat of leopards and other animals.
