Lebanon: seven people suffocated by smoke from fires

AA / Lebanon

Seven Lebanese were victims of suffocation on Saturday, following fires that broke out in agricultural areas in the district of Tire, in the south of the country, according to eyewitnesses.

The same sources reported to the Anadolu Agency (AA) correspondent that the fire had ravaged large areas of trees and forests and had approached residential areas in neighboring villages.

However, no press release was issued by the Lebanese authorities concerning the victims of the fires.

According to a brief statement from the Lebanese government, Prime Minister Najib Mikati has made proactive contacts, asking for help from neighboring countries, if the situation requires.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has announced its participation in firefighting operations.

“UNIFIL is helping civil defense units put out the fires,” UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti said in a press statement.

The official Lebanese press agency said for its part, it was difficult for more than eight fire teams to control the fires, because of the strong winds which contributed to bring the fire closer to the houses.
