Lebanon officially requests satellite images from Russia of day of Beirut port explosion

AA / Beirut

Lebanese President Michel Aoun formally asked Russia on Friday to obtain satellite images of the day of the explosion in the port of the capital, Beirut, on August 4, 2020.

This is what emerges from his meeting with the Russian Ambassador to Beirut, Alexander Rudakov, at the Presidential Palace of Baabda, east of Beirut, according to a statement from the Lebanese Presidency.

The statement said that the Lebanese President “officially asked Ambassador Rudakov to inform the Russian authorities of Lebanon’s willingness to obtain satellite images of the day of the explosion in the port of Beirut”.

The same source reported the words of Michel Aoun who said: “Perhaps these photos will provide additional information that can benefit the judicial investigation into the crime.”

For his part, Rudakov promised to transfer the Lebanese request to the Russian leaders, according to the same statement.

On August 4, 2020, a massive explosion occurred in the port, killing 218 people and injuring around 7,000, as well as massive property damage to residential and commercial buildings, according to official figures.
