Singapore almost caused a big surprise against Thailand
On December 17, AFF Cup 2024 enters a series of key matches of Group B with the focus being the encounter between the Singapore team and the Thai team at Kallang Stadium. Thailand and Singapore won the previous two matches, so whichever team wins this encounter will get the first ticket to the semi-finals.
The big surprise happened when host Singapore scored two consecutive goals in the 10th and 34th minute to take the lead over defending champion Thailand. The away team promptly scored a goal in injury time in the first half to shorten the score to 1-2 and then equalized 2-2 in the second half. It took extra time with the help of technology to assist the referee ( VAR), the Thai team scored a 3-2 lead and then sealed a 4-2 victory. With this victory, the Thai team won all 3 matches, gaining 9 points, maintaining the top spot in the group and the ticket to the semi-finals even though there is 1 match left to play against Cambodia. Meanwhile, Singapore is still ranked second in the table with 6 points.
In the early match on the same day, the Cambodian team let Timor Leste score the opening goal but successfully came back, winning 2-1 in the end. With this valuable victory, the Cambodian team has the same 4 points as Malaysia. Thus, the remaining semi-final ticket of Group A will be a race between Singapore (6 points), Cambodia (4 points) and Malaysia (4 points). In the final match on December 20, Singapore faced Malaysia while Cambodia faced Thailand.
If Vietnam defeats the Philippines on December 18, the top spot in Group B belongs to coach Kim Sang-sik and his team, so Vietnam and Thailand will not face each other in the AFF Cup 2024 semi-finals.
