Large earthquake in Haiti kills 304 people

According to Reuters, the earthquake was strong, but did not appear to cause major damage, and is likely to have fewer people killed than the catastrophic 2010 earthquake.

However, according to Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency, the preliminary death toll stood at 304 and at least 1,800 were injured. Emergency teams are conducting initial rescue and many residents are involved in helping to save buried people.
At least 949 homes, 7 churches, 2 hotels and 3 schools were destroyed. More than 723 homes, 1 prison, 3 health centers and 7 schools were damaged but there was no major damage to port, airport or telecommunications infrastructure.

At least 1,800 people were injured in the quake.

Meanwhile, many parts of Haiti are facing increasing hunger. Healthcare is overloaded due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Road access to the earthquake site in the south has been limited as criminal gangs occupy key areas.
