Karuvannur bank scam; CPM fires one-man anti-corruption activist

Thrissur: The CPM expelled an activist who had staged a one-man protest against the Karuvannur loan scam. Former branch secretary Sujesh Kannad was expelled from the primary membership. The Porathisery South local committee took action against Sujesh.

Sujesh had earlier said that he had received death threats in protest of the bank scam. The strike ignored strong opposition within the party.

Sujesh had been on the road in front of the bank since June 14. The CPM was in crisis as other parties supported the strike. With this came the death threat.

At the same time, the Crime Branch received more evidence of loan fraud. It was found that more than two loans were given to 24 people on the same basis. Of these, ten loans were sanctioned to the family members of the accused. The condition that a person should not be given a loan of more than Rs 50 lakh has also been violated. More than Rs 50 lakh was sanctioned to 11 people.

The probe team also found that Rs 3 crore was given to the accused by the forged signatures of the board members. The Crime Branch registered a case for forgery. The land transactions made by the accused in the name of relatives are also being investigated.
