- Tharoor says Kangana Ranaut’s remark is ridiculous
Tharoor said that if Mahatma Gandhi had told the British that his law was being violated if it was full of injustice and begged for independence, they would have no idea about it.
Tharoor was responding to a controversial statement made by Kangana Ranaut at a function to mark the 75th anniversary of her independence. “We got independence in 1947, not freedom, but begging. The country really became independent in 2014.” Kangana Ranaut said.
Is it the language of a beggar to say, “If you want to punish me, punish me, I will accept the punishment”? The freedom struggle was a movement of immense fortitude and vigor. Imagine passing unarmed among hundreds of lathi.
Tharoor recalled that Lala Lajpat Rai was killed following a lathi charge. Lala Lajpat Rai was beheaded during a non-violent protest. Tharoor said it was braver to go and kill someone with a gun than to be killed.
