The head of the EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, greeted the idea of a truce on the Ukraine War on Monday. But, on the eve of the conversation scheduled for this Tuesday, among Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to discuss this possible first step towards peace, he warned during a meeting of Foreign Ministers in Brussels against the word of Moscow. It is a fairly widespread suspicion between the twenty -seven.
“You cannot trust Russia,” said former Prime Minister Estonia, according to which Moscow has submitted for a 30 -day truce to which kyiv has already given her approval last week questioning that the Kremlin is willing to find a peaceful way.
The extended idea in an EU that has been in intense negotiations for weeks so that neither kyiv nor the twenty -seven themselves are ignored when sitting down to dialogue is that, as they have reiterated from leaders to ministers, the ball is now in the field of Russia. This was also made by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, one of the first -line European actors in both Europe and Washington.
“President Zelenski has had the courage to accept the US proposal of an ato the 30 -day fire. It is now Russia to demonstrate that you really want peace, ”he wrote in X after speaking, this Monday, with President Ukraine and, the eve, with Trump, as he said.
“The conditions that have presented [los rusos] They show that they don’t really want peace. Because what they present as conditions are all the final objectives they want to achieve with war, ”Kallas said. For the Polish Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, whose country exercises this semester the rotary presidency of the EU Council, this proposal is a “test for Russia to see who wants peace and who does not”. And the conditions that Moscow is putting that “it does not accept it,” he said.
“Now the ball is on Russian side and plays Russia to show us that he really believes in a peace or that he only wants to continue in his war of aggression,” the Spanish minister, José Manuel Albares, agreed, who despite this advocated “encourage” Moscow to take the next step. Of course, without neglecting the Ukrainian flank: “Europeans have to remain firm supporting a fair and lasting peace, not letting this opportunity happen that this may happen. But at the same time, delivering predictable, constant help to the Ukrainian government, ”he summarized.
Ukraine focused again a good part of the discussions of the heads of the Diplomacy of the twenty -seven. Specifically, the debate on how to make kyiv with the strongest possible position to any type of negotiation. These discussions are produced at the beginning of a key week not only because of the conversations between Washington and Moscow, but for the multitude of international appointments on European security – and of Ukraine – that will happen to the highest level in the next few days.
Beyond that plane, the appointment of the ministers served to continue the conversations about the Kallas initiative that states that the EU mobilizes departure 20,000 million in military aid to Ukraine for this year and that it can reach “potentially” to 40,000 million, depending on the Ukraine needs and the view of the withdrawal of Washington and its approach to Moscow. The instrument is presented as a voluntary vehicle whose total amount will be distributed according to the economic weight of each participating country, so Spain would correspond around 8.68% of the fund (more than 3,000 million euros). Although Kallas said he received “broad political support” to his initiative on Monday, he acknowledged that there are still “many details” for clarifying the doubts and reluctance of several member states, including France or Spain.
