Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed has received a “written message” from his American counterpart, Joe Biden.
The head of state had received this Friday at the Presidential Palace in Carthage, an official delegation of senior American officials led by Jonathan Finer, deputy of the national security adviser of the White House, who had given him the written message of the American President , Joe Biden, according to a press release from the Presidency of the Tunisian Republic published on his official Facebook page.
The services of the Presidency did not provide any details on the duration and the circumstances of this visit.
“Finer sent a written message from Biden to Saïed’s address,” the statement said without revealing the content of the message.
For his part, Saïed declared that “the exceptional measures taken on July 25 fall within the framework of the application of the Constitution and respond to the aspirations of the people, in particular with regard to the political, economic and social crises and the endemic corruption in the country ”.
Saïed warned against “the attempts of some (without naming the parties concerned) to spread rumors and untruths about the reality of the situation in Tunisia”.
The Tunisian President declared that “there was no need to worry about the values of freedom, justice and democracy, which Tunisia shares with American society,” the statement read.
Saïed stressed that he “adheres to the will of the people, and assumes its commitment to its problems and concerns, and will not accept injustice or violations of rights, stressing that Tunisia will remain a moderate country. and open, attached to its strategic partnerships with its historical friends, ”the same source adds.
For his part, Jonathan Finer indicated that “The American President is following the evolution of the situation in Tunisia and expressing all his esteem to Tunisia and its President”.
“The United States is attached to its strategic friendship with Tunisia and supports its democratic process and looks forward to the next steps which will be undertaken by the Head of State at the governmental and political levels.”
Kaïs Saïed, announced, on the evening of Sunday, July 25, during an emergency meeting with senior military and security officials, the dismissal of Head of Government Hichem Mechichi, the freezing of the powers of Parliament for a period of 30 days, as well as the lifting of the parliamentary immunity of all deputies.
Saïed’s decisions come in the wake of popular protests that have taken place in several governorates of the country, demanding the resignation of the government, amid economic and health difficulties and a political crisis that has lasted for months in the country.
Some political parties considered the said measures a “coup d’état against the Constitution”, while others were in favor, considering that it was a “rectification of the revolutionary process”.
