Justice BV Nagaratna becomes first woman Chief Justice of India; Assume charge in 2027

New Delhi: The country’s first woman Chief Justice BV Nagaratna will take over in 2027. Justice Nagaratna is currently the judge of the Karnataka High Court.

The apex court collegium headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana has recommended nine persons, including Justice Nagaratna, to the apex court. It has three women judges.

Apart from Justice BV Nagaratna, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Bela Trivedi are also on the list. Both are judges in the Telangana High Court and the Gujarat High Court.

For a long time, the need for a woman justice for India has been heard from many quarters. Before the retirement of former Chief Justice SA Bobde, it was said that the time had come for India to have a woman Chief Justice.

Justice Nagaratna is the daughter of ES Venkata Ramaiah, who was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from June 1989 to December 1989. Apart from them, Justice Abhay Srinivas OK, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice JK Maheshwari, Justice CT Ravikumar and Justice MM Sundaresh have also made recommendations to the Supreme Court.
