Sheet Khmer Times reported that 4 people were killed and 5 injured when a crowd gathered at the villa of businessman Sok Kong in Phnom Penh (Cambodia) this morning, January 23, to receive lucky money.
Businessman Sok Kong often does charity work every year and the incident happened at his residence on Preah Norodom Street in Daun Penh district, when many people gathered to receive lucky money, also known as ang pao. Each person was given 40,000 riel (nearly 250,000 VND) and 2 kg of rice.
Witnesses said that chaos occurred as the number of people gathered increased, causing some people to suffocate and faint. The situation escalated, forcing authorities to intervene.
Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng and Vice Governor Sok Penhvuth led emergency forces to the scene, mobilizing rescue vehicles and human resources to take victims to medical facilities and restore order.

According to news reports, the above four victims were among the injured taken to the hospital, of which two died at Calmette Hospital and two died at Ang Duong Hospital.
After the incident, Mr. Sok Kong and Mayor Khuong Sreng gave money to support the victims. The governor gave 5 million riel and a coffin to each family of the dead victims and 2 million riel to each injured victim.
Businessman Sok Kong awarded $6,000 for each death and 4 million riel for each injured victim.
