Jallianwala Bagh renovation: Heritage not destroyed, work done after experts’ approval

New Delhi
There is a lot of controversy these days regarding the Jallianwala Bagh memorial. While the opposition is terming the conservation and renovation work done in the monument as tampering with history, it alleged that as a martyrdom site in the freedom struggle, this place is very sacred and honorable, in the name of renovation, it is a tourist place. Efforts are being made to make it, which is an insult to the martyrs. However, amidst all this controversy, a top government source says that the renovation and conservation of Jallianwala Bagh has been done keeping in mind the dignity and respect of that heritage in every way. In this whole process, the old and original heritage was not destroyed from anywhere. The new monument of Jallianwala Bagh was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It is also being argued that renovation work has been done many times in this garden. The entire work of renovation and restoration of the monument was done by the Ministry of Culture. An advisory committee was formed to oversee the project. Apart from the Ministry of Culture, officials from the Ministry of Tourism, Department of Archeology and construction sector government company NBCC were involved. A tender of 20 crores was floated for the project.

According to sources, the approval of experts and historians was taken on the draft of the renovation project. After renovation, four galleries were prepared here, in which the history related to Punjab, Jallianwala Bagh massacre, information related to revolutionaries like Udham Singh and Bhagat Singh inspired by this incident and original material photos related to this event will be shown. Apart from this, there is also a plan to display things related to the people killed in this massacre, such as caps, safa, shoes and personal things from the family. According to a source close to the ministry, bullet marks which had become extremely light over time have been highlighted. Similarly, to prevent the dirt going into the well, glasses have been installed around it. Similarly, the waste and dirty fountain has been repaired. Along with this, some landscaping has been done in the garden. Whereas on the dispute about light and show, it is being argued that the old system of light and sound was not working, so a new one was installed.
