Artüz, who made a presentation titled “Climate Crisis and Seas” at the 27th General Assembly of the Turkish City Councils Platform, hosted by the Edirne City Council at the Edirne Municipality Cultural Center, stated that the climate crisis had a negative impact on the seas.
Stating that there are 4 different character seas surrounding three sides of Turkey, Artüz said that Marmara has a different and unique structure.
Pointing out that the temperatures on land and seas have increased due to global warming, Artüz continued as follows:
“When we say global climate crisis, we are talking about an increase in air temperature based on drought. Temperatures also increase in the seas, which have a natural air conditioning environment at the same rate. However, when we look at the Marmara Sea in particular, we encounter water temperatures that increase by two and a half times the global warming based on pollution. Why? Because we “As we pollute the Sea of Marmara, we increase the amount of suspended solids. In other words, the turbidity of the Sea of Marmara increases. The Sea of Marmara heats up like the water we put under the sun in a black bowl.”
Artüz underlined that the increase in temperature in the Sea of Marmara negatively affects biological diversity.
Stating that atmospheric differences have been observed in Marmara since the 2000s, Artüz said:
“If warming is two and a half times ahead of global warming, then we can model very roughly what will happen in the atmosphere and globally by two and a half times. It is said that with an increase of 1 degree, species diversity will decrease by a certain rate. But the upper water temperature of the Marmara Sea is 2, Let’s look at the fish of commercial importance, when we increase it by 5 degrees, we come to zero from 124 different species. At the moment, it is not possible to find a species unique to the Marmara Sea in the warming upper water body of the Marmara Sea. There are only migratory species. If it continues like this, and we If we continue what we are doing like this, we will lose the Black Sea like the Sea of Marmara in a very short time.”
