New Delhi
The Central Government has removed Dr PPK Ramacharyulu from the post of Secretary General of Rajya Sabha. He was appointed just 10 weeks ago. PC Modi, former chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), will be the next Secretary General of the Upper House, replacing Dr Ramacharyulu. This is a rare occasion in the history of the Rajya Sabha when an officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) has been made the Secretary General.

Former Union Minister and Congress’s Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh has strongly criticized this decision of the Modi government. Ramesh said in a tweet that he was not surprised by this decision. He wrote, ‘Dr PPK Ramacharyulu is an excellent professional, non-partisan and fully qualified for the post – these are the three deadly sins in the Modi government.’

Usually this post has been held by senior officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or Parliamentary Secretariat. The government has not given any reason for Ramacharyulu’s removal.

Ramacharyulu to be advisor to Rajya Sabha chairman
PC Modi may take charge on Friday. Modi, a 1982 batch IRS officer, has been given three extensions as the CBDT chairman since August 2019. Ramacharyulu was appointed as the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha on 1 September. He has now been made an advisor to the chairman. The Secretary-General is in charge of the Secretariat of the House and is the Speaker’s right hand in running the House.
