Israel reduced parts of the Gaza Strip to rubble with its bombings on the Palestinian territory in response to the Hamas attack last weekend.
More than 1,000 people, including 290 children, have been killed in Gaza since the start of Israeli bombing, and some 1,000 homes have been destroyed.
Israeli authorities said the death toll in Israel exceeded 1,200.
In the Gaza Strip there live some 2.3 million people,making it one of the most densely populated places in the world.
“We are completely overwhelmed by the number of injuries and deaths,” Mahmoud Matar, head of surgery at a Gaza hospital, told the BBC.
“The bodies arrive in pieces,” said Matar.
More of 260,000 people have been displaced from their homes, the UN reported.
This represents the “largest number of displaced people since the 50-day escalation of hostilities in 2014,” the United Nations said.
The number of injuries and deaths is expected to continue to rise.
