Israel for the first time took responsibility for the assassination of the leader of Hamas in Iran

According to Reuters, the above move could further increase tensions between Iran and Israel in a region. Minister Katz further emphasized: “Israel will destroy the Houthi’s strategic infrastructure and destroy the leader of this group the same way Tel Aviv did with the leaders Haniyeh, Sinwar and Nasrallah in Tehran, Gaza and Lebanon”.

Over the past year, the Houthis have regularly organized attacks on ships on commercial shipping routes in the Red Sea to show solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and blockade the sea against Israel.

At the end of July, Mr. Ismail Haniyeh, a figure representing Hamas in international relations and former political leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, was assassinated in Tehran. At that time, Mr. Haniyeh went to Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkia. Mr. Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed in their bedroom. Iranian authorities accused Israel of being behind the incident, but Israel did not issue a statement claiming responsibility.

A few months after the above assassination, Israel announced on October 17 that leader Yahya Sinwar of the Hamas group had been killed by the Israeli army. Mr. Sinwar is considered the main architect of the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel. The Israeli army said it killed Mr. Sinwar in an operation in the southern Gaza Strip on October 16.
