Russian news agency TASS announced that the Embassy of the Greek Cypriot Administration of Russia will start providing consular services for Russian citizens in Nicosia, the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
According to the news of the agency, an official from the Russian Embassy in Southern Cyprus said, “We will start providing consular services in the north of Nicosia very soon. The work will be done on a regular basis,” he said.
The official noted that the USA, England, Germany, Italy and France have been providing consular services to the north of Cyprus for a long time.
Making a statement after the news in the Russian media, TRNC President Ersin Tatar said:
“There was no demand to open a consulate. There were attempts to open an office. It also has an office in England. It is not inconvenient for us to have Russia as well. There are a lot of Russians here, of course it’s normal for them to open an office and run some business. It would be nice if they did.”
Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu denied the news and said, “There are attempts to open an office, but opening a consulate is something else, there is no such thing.”
