AA / Baghdad

An Iraqi security source said on Saturday that two workers were killed and another wounded in an armed attack carried out by members of the terrorist organization Daesh in the province of Kirkuk, in the north of the country.

A Kirkuk police officer told Anadolu Agency that “elements of Daesh attacked coal industry workers in the Al-Hawaij area, in the district of Hawija, southwest of Kirkuk, with automatic weapons “.

The source, who requested anonymity, said “the attack killed two workers and injured another.”

In recent months, the frequency of attacks by suspected ISIS elements has increased, especially in the area between Kirkuk and Salah al-Din (north) and Diyala (east), known as the “triangle of death”.

In 2017, Iraq declared victory over Daesh, restoring its sovereignty over all of its territory invaded by the terrorist organization, in the summer of 2014, and which was estimated at about a third of the country’s surface area. . However, the organization still has sleeper cells in large areas and continues to launch sporadic attacks.
