An Iraqi soldier was killed and another wounded, when a device exploded Tuesday, during the passage of an army patrol in the governorate of Nineveh, in the north of the country.
A police officer in Nineveh told Anadolu Agency (AA) that an explosive device had targeted a military patrol in the district of Hatra, south of Nineveh, during a mission to search for cells of Daesh.
The officer – who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media – explained that the explosion left one dead and one injured and caused property damage to their military vehicle.
In 2017, Iraq announced its victory over the terrorist organization Daesh by regaining control of its entire territory, estimated at about a third of the area of the country, which the organization had invaded in 2014.
However, the terrorist organization still maintains sleeper cells in large areas of Iraq, especially in the area between Kirkuk and Salaheddine (north) and Diyala (east), known as the “Triangle of Death” and from from which it launches sporadic attacks.
