Iran foils ‘piracy operation’ in Gulf of Aden

AA / Istanbul

The Iranian naval force announced on Saturday that it had foiled a maritime piracy operation targeting two Iranian tankers in the Gulf of Aden.

Quoted by the local IRNA News Agency, Iranian Navy Naval Force Commander Admiral Shahram Irani said the group of Iranian Navy ships belonging to the destroyer “Alborz” was attacked on Saturday in dawn, as he accompanied two Iranian tankers.

He explained that the naval destroyer “Alborz” had managed to deal with dozens of pirates equipped with five speedboats, calling the incident “maritime terrorism”.

The Iranian official added that the pirates had been forced to flee and leave the scene, saying the two tankers had crossed the Gulf of Aden safely.
