Anthropic, an artificial intelligence start-up backed by Google and Amazon, announced the hiring of Mike Krieger, former co-founder and CTO of Instagram, as Chief Product Officer. The move is part of a strategic plan to extend the reach of the recently launched Claude chatbot into new countries (and across Europe) beyond the US, which positions itself as a direct rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Krieger will be responsible for management and design, with the goal of expanding Anthropic’s suite of enterprise applications.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei noted in the company’s blog that Krieger’s experience developing intuitive products and user experiences will be key to creating new ways of interacting with Claude, particularly in the workplace. Krieger is known for growing Instagram’s tech team to over 450 people and helping grow the platform to over a billion users before it was sold to Meta Platforms (then Facebook) in 2012. Anthropic also announced this week that Claude is now available across Europe.
