Temple bar:This year Rabi season started in Tuticorin district last month. Various crops such as gram, gram, maize, white corn, gundu chili, local coriander, small onion, cotton sun gandhi, sesame were cultivated here in an area of about 1.70 lakh hectares.
The soils here are of Karisal, Seval, Potal, Kuruman. After sowing in the last month of Puratasi, the seeds got spoiled due to insufficient rain. They plowed it again and sowed it. The seeds that germinated in the low lying areas did not germinate in the upland areas. Due to the late onset of the North-East Monsoon, the crops are in poor condition.
Crops in low-lying areas are floating in water due to continuous rains. Also, continuous rains cause weeds to grow around the crops incessantly. Weeding was not possible due to high moisture in the land. Due to this, farmers use chemical herbicides to kill weeds. Meanwhile, the farmers have insisted that the subsidy should be given in cash instead of in kind as in the past.
Regarding this, Karisal Bhoomi Farmers Association President A. Varadarajan said: There are many clay soils in the same village. Pulses are cultivated in seval and short soil lands, white corn, sesame, pulses are cultivated in botal lands, and cotton, maize, coriander, chillies, small onions etc. are cultivated in clean karisal lands. In the past, the government provided cash subsidies to farmers for ploughing, seeds, fertilizers, medicines, sprays and pollination.
But for the past 2.5 years, the subsidy has been given in the form of seed, medicine and fertilizer instead of cash. The seeds, fertilizers and medicines are provided uniformly across the state as per the respective land. In Thoothukudi district, small onions are planted in the fields and cultivated. But the government does not give it as fruit but as seed.
They do farming in areas like Villupuram, Bhavoorchatram, Namakkal, where seeds are planted and planted. Onion is not cultivated here with seed. Also, local coriander is cultivated in Kovilpatti, Vlathikulam, Chatur, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar areas. But Govt North District and. Lion is supplying coriander seeds to the farmers in the southern districts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Wild cilantro is very hearty and pungent. Lion Coriander has no bitterness or bitterness. Mostly in this region Kundu wathal called Mundu wathal is cultivated in rainfed lands. But the government provides samba vatal seed. Different types of crops are more productive for each region of soil.
But apart from that it is of no use without providing seeds that cannot be cultivated, medicines that cannot be used, and seeds that are suitable for the soil. Therefore, it will be useful if we provide cash subsidy instead of providing seed, fertilizer and medicine as it was provided in the past. This is what he said.
