As in the first Test, England came out on top with captain Joe Root in the lead. Root made a great partnership with Rory Burns for the third wicket. Eventually Burns was knocked out by Mohammed Shami in the LBW. Burns was out for a run at half-time. Burns scored 49 off 136 balls.

Root completed his half-century early on the third day. Earlier, India had scored 364 in the first innings. KL Rahul (century) and Rohit Sharma (half century) led India to the top score.
