In Miami, the search under the rubble of the collapsed building has been suspended

In Miami, search and rescue operations have been suspended under the rubble of a residential complex that collapsed on June 24. The decision was made for safety reasons, as specialists fear that the rest of the building could collapse.

According to Miami-Dade County Mayor Danielle Levin Kawa, “the search for survivors will resume as soon as it is safe.”

“Our specialists continue to monitor, we have stopped searching in order to assess the situation and all possible options and decide on further steps,” she said.

Earlier on Wednesday, the bodies of five more people were removed from the rubble. Thus, the number of victims of the accident has increased to 18, another 145 people are reported missing.

The partial collapse of the 12-story Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, part of the Miami metropolitan area, occurred on the night of June 24. About half of the 130 apartments in the building were destroyed. The high-rise building was erected in 1981.
