Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned till December 16 after a war of words broke out between Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday amid the controversy over the no-confidence motion against the Chairman. The Rajya Sabha Speaker attacked the opposition and said that he would “sacrifice his life for the country” and that the opposition was insulting the Constitution.
Rajya Sabha Chairman said, “I am a farmer’s son, I will not show weakness. I will sacrifice my life for the country. You have only one job for 24 hours, why is the farmer’s son sitting here… see what you are saying. I have endured a lot… You have the right to bring the proposal but you are insulting the Constitution.”
Responding to Dhankhar, Rajya Sabha leader Mallikarjun Kharge said that he has not come here to listen to his praise.
Kharge said, “You (BJP) are encouraging members to speak against members of other parties… I am also a farmer’s son. I have faced more challenges than you… You are insulting our party leaders; You are insulting Congress. We have not come here to listen to your praise, we have come here to discuss.”
Responding to Kharge, the Rajya Sabha Chairman said, “The whole world knows whose praise you like. It is important that the House functions.”
Rajya Sabha proceedings could not proceed on Friday due to the uproar by the Finance Ministry and opposition parties over the no-confidence notice against House Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
