MEXICO CITY – Hurricane Hilary strengthened to Category 4 this Fridayin the Pacific of Mexico, where would make landfall this weekend in the Baja California peninsula and then would enter California, United Statesreported the National Meteorological Service (SMN).
In the agency’s latest notice, Hilary was 400 miles south of Cabo San LucasBaja California Sur, the most popular tourist destination in northern Mexico.
The cyclone, which emerged on Wednesday as a tropical storm, It is heading west-northwest with a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.sustained winds of 230 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 280 kilometers per hour, according to the SMN.
The phenomenon would leave “intense” rains in Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit and Jaliscoin addition to “very heavy” rains in Durango, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Colima and Michoacán, according to the forecast for this Friday.
Also, there would be “heavy” rainfall in Baja California, Querétaro, State of MexicoMexico City and Morelos.
On the other hand, gusts of wind of 80 to 100 kilometers per hour are expected and waves of 5 to 7 meters high on the coasts of Baja California Sur.
Gusts of wind of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour and waves of 3 to 5 meters high are also expected on the coast of Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima, as well as gusts of wind of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour and waves of 2 to 4 meters high on the coasts of Sinaloa and Michoacán.
Hilary could make landfall on Sunday in Baja Californiaaccording to the map projected by the SMN, while on Monday it would enter US territory as a tropical storm.
For this reason, the agency recommended “extreme precautions to the general population in the areas of the states mentioned by rain, wind and waves.”
To date they have formed seven named cyclones in the current hurricane season Pacific: Adrian, Beatriz, Calvin, Dora, Eugene, Fernanda and Greg, none with damage in Mexico.
The Government of Mexico forecast in May the formation of up to 38 named cyclones in the 2023 season, of which 5 would impact the country.
Of that number, between 16 and 22 systems could occur in the Pacific Ocean, and between 10 and 16 in the Atlantic.
