Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi congratulated Charanjit Singh Channi on being elected as the new leader of the party’s legislature party in Punjab. Said that the promises made to the people of the state have to be continued to be fulfilled.

Senior Dalit leader Charanjit Singh Channi was on Sunday elected as the new leader of the party’s legislature party in Punjab following prolonged tussle within the Congress and the resignation of Amarinder Singh. He will take oath as the next Chief Minister of the state on Monday. He is the first Dalit leader from Punjab to become the Chief Minister of the state. Channi, 58, will take oath as the chief minister at 11 am on Monday.
Congress’s Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat informed about Channi’s election as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party. Earlier, the name of senior Congress leader of the state Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa was discussed as the frontrunner in the race for the post of Chief Minister. However, on the last occasion, the Congress high command stamped Channi’s name.
Sources say that State Congress Committee President Navjot Singh Sidhu strongly advocated Channi’s name and then Rahul Gandhi approved Channi’s name after a long consultation with Sonia Gandhi and senior leaders in Delhi.
Channi comes from the Dalit Sikh (Ramdasiya Sikh) community and was the Minister of Technical Education in the Amarinder government. He is an MLA from Chamkaur Sahib Assembly Constituency in Rupnagar District. He became an MLA from this constituency for the first time in the year 2007 and after that he registered consecutive victories.
