Guarantor countries advocate continuation of dialogue on the Syrian Constitution


The guarantor countries of the Astana process (Turkey, Russia and Iran) stressed the need to hold the 6th meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee as soon as possible.

The joint statement of the three countries following the main meeting of the 16th round of talks on Syria in the Astana format in Nur-Sultan was read by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Yerlan Alimbayev.

The guarantor countries reaffirmed their commitment to the territorial integrity of Syria and expressed their determination to continue interaction in order to counter separatist plans aimed at undermining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and threatening the national security of neighboring countries.

The statement condemns terrorist activities that have resulted in civilian casualties in various regions of Syria.

“A decision was made on further cooperation for the final liquidation of DEASH. Within the framework of international humanitarian law and in order to ensure the protection of civilian infrastructure, it was decided to continue cooperation in the fight against all individuals and groups associated with DEASH, such as Al-Nusra Front and Al-Qaeda, “the final document says.

Turkey, Russia and Iran also condemned Israel’s continuing attacks on Syria in violation of international law, and opposed the illegal seizure of the Arab Republic’s oil revenues.

The guarantor countries reiterated their conviction that there is no military solution to the crisis in Syria.

In this context, a decision was made to hold the 6th meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee as soon as possible, and the importance of the committee’s work in Geneva was emphasized.

The guarantor countries of the Astana process have expressed concern about the negative consequences of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) pandemic for the humanitarian situation and the health care system in Syria.

“The need to strengthen humanitarian assistance to the Syrians throughout the country was emphasized without discrimination, politicization and preconditions. In this regard, the guarantor countries appealed to the international community, mainly the UN, with an appeal to increase humanitarian aid to Syria, ”follows from the statement.

Ankara, Moscow and Tehran expressed satisfaction with the recent successful steps taken in the area of ​​confidence-building measures, such as facilitating the return of refugees, releasing prisoners and tracing missing persons.

It was decided to organize the next round of talks on Syria in the Astana format taking into account the epidemiological situation in Nur-Sultan by the end of the year.
