The National Testing Agency (NTA) has taken a big decision in the controversy related to the results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2024 exam. According to this decision of NTA, 1563 students who got grace marks in NEET UG exam will now have to take this exam again. The grace marks given to all of them have been withdrawn. This decision has been taken on the suggestion of the expert committee.
For the students who got grace marks, NTA will conduct the NEET UG exam again on June 23. Candidates affected by this decision will now be given two options – either they accept the score they were originally given without grace marks or take the exam again on June 23. A senior NTA official has told the Indian Express that this time the exam will be conducted in the same six cities where the students were given grace marks. But this time the exam centers will be different. NTA has also informed the Supreme Court about this decision.

The NTA and the Union Education Ministry on Saturday constituted a committee to review the normalisation policy under which grace marks were given to more than 1,563 candidates who appeared for the NEET exam. Most of these students were given “grace marks” to compensate for the “loss of time” during the NEET UG exam. The affected candidates were from six centers – including two centers in Chhattisgarh (one each in Balod and Dantewada) and one each in Meghalaya, Surat, Bahadurgarh in Haryana and Chandigarh. The NTA has also said that the special committee will also look into other such complaints made by the students by June 4.

Why was there controversy over NEET UG 2024 exam results?
When the results of NEET UG 2024 exam were declared on June 4, it was found that this time the number of students who got 100% marks i.e. 720/720 is 67, which is exceptionally high. Apart from this, some students also got 719 and 718 marks out of 720, which is not possible in the way NEET marks are given. This time the results of the exam were also released 10 days before the previously announced date. Due to all these things, fingers were being raised on the NEET exam results. Soon after the results were declared, students and some NEET experts / tutors raised all these issues on social media. Many students took to the streets and protested and opposition parties also made it a big issue. After this the issue reached the court.

What is normalization policy?
NTA usually uses normalized scores for some other entrance exams like JEE Main and CUET. These exams are conducted on different days. However, the normalization formula in these exams is released in advance for the information of the people. This has never been done for NEET UG exams which are held on the same day for all the candidates. However, now NTA has said that from now on, efforts will be made to use this method in NEET UG as well.
