Goa polls: Mamata Banerjee says Leander Paes is Trinamool’s younger brother behind film stars

Kolkata: With just months to go before the Goa Assembly elections, former tennis star Leander Paes has joined the Trinamool Congress. Pace entered the party in Goa in the presence of party president and chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

Mamata Banerjee has officially announced that Leander Paes has joined the Trinamool Congress. “Leander Paes is happy to join the party. I am very happy. He is my younger brother. I have known him since he was the Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare. Paes was very young then,” he said.

Paes said Didi was the real winner. “I have retired from tennis. Now I have to serve the people through politics and make changes in the country. Didi (Mamata Banerjee) is the real winner,” he said.

Leander Paes hails from West Bengal and currently resides in Mumbai. He has won the doubles Grand Slam eight times and the mixed doubles Grand Slam title ten times. The country honored Paes with awards like Arjuna, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

The Trinamool Congress is active in Goa as the Assembly elections draw near. After retaining power in Bengal, many prominent people came to the Trinamool Congress. Efforts are on to bring people from the film and sports scene to the party. Movie stars Nafisa Ali and Mrinalini Deshprabhu arrived in Trinamool yesterday.
