German municipality apologizes to Muslim woman banned from voting for her veil

The German municipality of Bergheim apologized on Wednesday to a Muslim woman who was banned from voting because she wore a veil in the last parliamentary elections on September 26.

In a statement, the municipality said the woman in question (whose name has not been revealed) was wearing a headscarf and covering her face, was prevented from participating in the vote by one of the employees at the polling station. from the municipality of Bergheim, near Cologne.

According to the statement, the latter lodged a complaint with the center officials, who called on the authorities to intervene and force the employee to give her the ballot.

Following this “shameful incident”, the municipality presented its official apologies to the woman, while preliminary inquiries denied any “racist, Islamophobic or xenophobic intention” on the part of the employee.
