Designer Vy Nguyen experimented with monochrome black and white colors when launching the collection Riviere NoireInspired by Hanoi ao dai in the early 20th century.
Name Riviere Noire (roughly translated: Mysterious River) was inspired by Hanoi’s ao dai in the early years of the 20th century – around the time the Red River – one of the symbols of the Capital – also had its name. Riviere Rouge. She brings a combination of magic and modernity, between tradition mixed with a strong Avant-Garde breath. The designs use minimalist colors and delicate, strong cuts.
The designer skillfully highlights sophisticated and eye-catching details and shapes, notably the description of water branches – symbolizing the flow of water on the Red River. At the same time, the use of black tones not only adds depth and contrast to the design but also brings out the mystery and elegance of mysterious water areas. Overall, it creates a feeling that is both soft and close, but also equally personal and unique.
Inspired by ‘Avant-Garde monument’ Yohji Yamamoto, the designer experimented with monochrome colors to show that black can also become an attention-grabbing highlight, allowing us to focus more on ourselves. the product itself instead of being distracted by colorful patterns.
At the same time, the simplicity and loose-fit shape (loose fit with just enough width) are also characteristics of traditional Vietnamese clothing. Not too tight, it can still honor a woman’s figure with lines. Soft curves and hidden charm.
Talking about her debut collection, she wanted to dedicate her first project to Vietnam. Even though she has lived and worked in America for a long time, she still feels strongly attached to her homeland
The creative inspiration for this design arose when she looked at family photos. Proud of her origins, she hopes to promote culture, bring Vietnamese beauty to the Western fashion industry and strengthen Vietnam’s position on the world’s high-end fashion map, following in the footsteps of famous names. As a Vietnamese designer looking for a place in the fashion capital of New York, the young designer cannot avoid many difficulties. The list can range from finance, attracting investment to high competition, rapidly changing trends or networking in the industry with a young designer just starting out.
However, the Gen Z girl is still full of confidence: “My dynamism, along with unlimited creativity, will help me come up with new and different ideas. Furthermore, consumers are increasingly concerned about brands’ sustainability and ethics. This is an opportunity for Vy to create an environmentally and socially conscious fashion brand,” she shared.
Vy Nguyen’s full name is Nguyen Le Thuc Vy, 24 years old, living and working in the US. She graduated with a degree in fashion design from the Fashion Institute of Technology – one of the world’s top universities in design and fine arts. With experience interning and assisting at famous brands such as Dion Lee, Grace Ling and Yeon studio, she is currently working at a large sports fashion company in this city.
Coming from a family with a tradition in the Vietnamese fashion industry, at the age of 10, Vy started practicing fashion illustration and developed from there. “My brother was the one who introduced Vy to the Avant-Garde fashion world and from there influenced the way Vy thinks and designs a lot,” the young designer shared.
Regarding her upcoming plans, she is interested in trends combining technology and fashion, applying artificial intelligence (AI) to promote and eliminate limitations in the industry. Surely, this will be a notable face of the American – Vietnamese fashion industry in the near future.
