The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) announced on Tuesday the start of repair work on hundreds of houses damaged during the recent Israeli aggression against the Strip. Gaza.

This was stated by the Agency’s Commissioner General, Philippe Lazzarini, during a conference held in front of one of the damaged houses, in a Camp for Palestinian refugees, west of Gaza City. .

“1,200 destroyed houses belonging to Palestinian families who were unable to return to their homes because of the destruction will be rebuilt,” he said. “

Lazzarini explained that the agency needs “20 million US dollars, to meet the needs of the sector”, in terms of repairing destroyed houses.

For 11 days, Israel launched an aggression against the Gaza Strip, which ended with a ceasefire on May 21.

The assault resulted in great casualties, where 1,335 residential facilities were totally or severely destroyed, while around 12,886 houses were partially damaged, according to the Government Information Office in Gaza.

On the other hand, Lazzarini said that UNRWA does not have the cash “to pay the salaries of around 28,000 employees working at its headquarters, during the coming months of November and December”.

He expressed concern about the “persistent budget deficit of UNRWA”, which “jeopardizes” the continuity of service delivery.

However, he expressed optimism about the possibility of “overcoming this crisis in cooperation with the Member States”.

Regarding the bilateral agreement between UNRWA and Washington, Lazzarini denied the existence of any “political requirement, or agreement that could affect UNRWA’s mandate, or conflict with the values that the agency is committed “.

In early April, the Administration of US President Joe Biden announced the re-establishment of $ 150 million in financial support through UNRWA, following its removal by former President Donald Trump.

One of the terms of the agreement, stipulates “the cessation of aid to any refugee suspected of belonging to the Palestine Liberation Army, and to any other ‘criminal’ organization or participating in activities classified as terrorist by Israel and the United States. “

The agreement also stipulates, according to the Executive Bureau for Refugees, “the monitoring of the Palestinian program, the removal and suspension of any content that does not correspond to the standpoint of the occupation, and the monitoring of all institutions of UNRWA “.

UNRWA provides basic services, including education and health, to more than 5.5 million Palestinian refugees in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

UNRWA was created by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 1949 to provide assistance and protection to Palestinian refugees in five areas of operations, in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank and the Strip. Gaza.
