France: Re-election of Ali Rabeh in the first round in the municipal elections of Trappes

AA / Paris / Fatih KARAKAYA

Ali Rabeh was reelected on Sunday as mayor of Trappes in the Yvelines department (Paris) with 58.36% of the vote, in the first round, in a by-election under pressure, he announced on his Twitter account.

“Re-election from the 1st round, with at least 57% of the votes! A partial with a participation up 6 points compared to 2020, facing a right [zemmourisée] and patronage. What pride, thank you to the Trappists! », Wrote the re-elected mayor on Twitter, as soon as the first results were announced.

In fact, in the 2020 municipal elections, Rabeh won with just 161 votes in the second round.

But quickly the mayor found himself at the heart of a great media controversy that lasted several days.

A school teacher in this city, where a large population of foreign origin lives, accused the mayor of encouraging “Islamism and communitarianism”.

Some media even claimed that there were no mixed hairdressers and that women were not allowed in bars.

Following these controversies, the opposition parties have taken legal action to cancel the elections, accusing him in particular of having distributed, in the midst of the pandemic, 15,000 masks accompanied by his photo.

Justice had decided that it was part of the municipal campaign, but the candidate had not entered it in his campaign accounts.

New victory without appeal

In these new elections, Ali Rabeh therefore won a large victory by increasing his score but also with a markedly rising turnout with 41.59%, against 34.1% in 2020.

– Recognition of defeat

As the campaign unfolded in a deleterious climate, Ali Rabeh’s opponents quickly recognized defeat.

Othman Nasrou, the main opponent who accused the mayor of setting up “a clientelist system with intimidation and threats” published a press release on Twitter to recall “that he clearly did not succeed in convincing”.

He still continued his accusations of “double games” against the mayor.

For their part, Julien Bayou, the boss of environmentalists, and Jean Luc Mélenchon, leader of France Insoumise, both congratulated Ali Rabeh.
