Jimmy Carter is the 39th president of the United States
This morning, December 30 (Vietnam time), the non-profit organization representing the former president, the Carter Center, announced the passing of former US President Jimmy Carter.
According to AFP citing an announcement from the center, the memorial service is open to the public in Atlanta (Georgia) and Washington, DC.
Mr. Carter, the 39th US President (term 1977-1981), has been receiving care at a nursing home since mid-February 2023 in his hometown of Plains.

Mr. Carter overcame brain cancer in 2015 but faced a series of health scares in 2019 and he had to undergo surgery to remove pressure on his brain, according to CNN. He was a peanut farmer and a navy lieutenant before entering politics, then served a term as governor of Georgia and became the 39th president of the United States, from 1977 to 1981.
In the years following his presidency, Mr. Carter founded the Carter Center with his wife, Rosalynn Carter, with the hope of promoting world peace and health. Former President Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to promote peace globally.
According to a 1954 proclamation signed by then-US President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the US would fly its flag at half-staff for 30 days from the death of a president or former president. This is the longest period of flying the flag at half-mast, which is reserved for cases of current and former presidents.
If the deceased is the current vice president, the chief justice of the Supreme Court (current or retired), or the current speaker of the House of Representatives dies, flags are flown at half-mast for 10 days, according to The Hill.
