Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte presented online before ICC in The Hague on March 14
On March 14, ICC opened the trial of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on allegations of committing crimes against humanity related to the anti -drug campaign conducted by the Manila government during his time.
The judge chaired the Iulia Motoc trial that allowed Mr. Duterte to attend online via video following the long flight to The Hague since being arrested in Manila on March 11.
In the blue and tie vest costume, the former Philippine leader spoke with a weak voice and briefly confirmed the name and date of birth. The trial was organized to list the allegations that Mr. Duterte faced, as well as the rights as the defendant.
Lawyer Salvador Medialdea presented in the court that his client was “abducted from his homeland” and Duterte’s health was in a state of weakness. “In addition to confirming himself, he cannot attend this trial,” AFP quoted the lawyer.
Mr. Duterte was tired during the distance from the distance and often had to close his eyes for a long time.
However, Judge Motoc told Mr. Duterte that the court doctor confirmed the defendant was completely alert in mental and physical aspect. ICC confirmed that the current Manila government has executed the arrest warrant at the request of ICC. Mr. Duterte is the first former leader of an Asian nation to be arrested according to this process.
