Former Chief Justice of India Ramesh Chandra Lahoti passed away at a hospital here on Wednesday evening. Family sources gave this information. Justice Lahoti was 81 years old. Justice Lahoti was appointed as the 35th Chief Justice of India on June 1, 2004. He retired on 1 November 2005.
Lahoti was born on 1 November 1940. He was appointed as District and Sessions Judge in April 1977 by direct recruits from the Bar to the State Higher Judicial Service.
After being in office for a year, Justice Lahoti resigned in May 1978 and returned to the bar to practice primarily in the High Court. He was appointed an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on 3 May 1988 and was made a permanent judge on 4 August the following year.
Justice Lahoti was transferred to the Delhi High Court on February 7, 1994 and was later appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on December 9, 1998.
