Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy has been removed through voting. This is the first time in America’s 234-year parliamentary history that the Speaker has been removed through voting. Republican McCarthy has had to face the wrath of lawmakers from his own party.

A few days ago, a funding bill was brought in the House of Representatives to avert the government shutdown. McCarthy played an important role in getting it passed. Republicans have majority in the House of Representatives. Yet the way McCarthy worked with Democrats to pass the funding bill displeased many far-right Republican lawmakers.
Florida’s far-right lawmaker and Trump supporter Matt Gaetz introduced a resolution in the House to remove McCarthy. Alleged that they are working to benefit the Democrats. 208 Democrats along with 8 far-right Republicans voted to remove McCarthy from the post of speaker. 216 votes were cast against McCarthy, while 210 votes were cast in favor.
After being removed, Kevin McCarthy said that he would not run for this position again. Consideration is going on in the Republican Party regarding who will be the next speaker.
Former President Donald Trump is at the forefront as the Republican Party candidate for the US elections in 2024. He is a constant attacker on President Joe Biden. Obviously he would not have liked McCarthy working closely with Joe Biden. It is natural to see McCarthy’s removal linked to the internal fight of the Republican Party.
