The President of the Algerian Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, announced Tuesday evening on his social networks, the death of 25 members of the National People’s Army “after having succeeded in rescuing more than a hundred citizens from the burning flames in the mountains of Bejaïa and Tizi Ouzou ”.
“We bow to the souls of the sons of the nation,” added the Head of State, who offers his condolences to the families of the victims and expresses his deep sadness in the face of this tragedy.
While Algeria has been in the grip of terrible fires since Monday, the army mobilized to rescue the victims is paying a very heavy price.
According to the local Civil Protection, 73 fires are active in 13 localities of Kabylia including Tizi Ouzou, Bejaïa, Khenchela, Skikda or even Jijel.
The human toll of these fires described as criminal by the Minister of the Interior Kamel Beldjoud, is still not known but the Algerian official announced at least 6 deaths of civilians at midday.
“Only criminal hands can be at the origin of the simultaneous outbreak of fifty fires across several localities of the wilaya” he denounced at a press conference from Tizi Ouzou where he was dispatched on demand of President Tebboune.
The minister points to “criminal hands fed with hatred” and “wanting to harm Algeria”.
Kamel Beldjoud also ensures that investigations will be carried out in order to shed light on these crimes.
“Next Saturday, a delegation of 130 to 140 experts will go to Tizi Ouzou to assess on the ground, in the communes affected by the fires, the exact extent of the damage and losses”, he promised before to specify that the affected families will be compensated by the public authorities up to their losses.
