The Soudal team cyclist Remco Evenepoel suffered an accident this Tuesday while training in Belgium. Witnesses to the accident have reported that the collision was with a mail van where its driver opened the door and hit the Belgian. Evenepoel was taken to an Anderlecht hospital and suffers fractures to his ribs, right shoulder blade and right hand, his team explained in a statement. This is the second time in less than a year that he has broken the same collarbone after being involved in his season-defining Itzulia crash.
Evenepoel was lying on the ground for a few minutes after the fall. “His bike was completely split in half. Remco was so pale and was sitting in a chair for a while before they took him away in an ambulance,” says one of the witnesses. The recent world champion last September was treated by the emergency services and was covered in a thermal blanket after suffering the accident.
After his admission to the Anderlecht hospital, the Soudal team’s medical services transferred him to the Herentals medical center to evaluate the injuries and determine how his recovery will begin. The Belgian cyclist thus suffers a serious blow in his preparation for next season. Last year he won the time trial and the road test at the Paris Olympic Games, as well as the Cycling World Cup.
