The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has warned that if the situation is not immediately reversed in Sudan, there will be serious consequences for the engagement of the EU, including its financial support.

In a statement on behalf of the 27 released by his office on Tuesday, Borrell stressed that the European Union strongly condemns the attempted coup in Sudan.

The head of European diplomacy added that the establishment by the President of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, of a state of emergency in the country and the suspension of key articles of the constitutional document, was one thing. inadmissible.

The declaration calls for “to respect the right to demonstrate peacefully, to avoid further violence and bloodshed at all costs”. The 27 EU countries also stressed the imperative that “perpetrators of human rights violations will be held to account”.

The EU strongly supports the democratic transition process in Sudan, the statement added.

The Sudanese Ministry of Culture and Information announced Monday morning, through its account on the social network Facebook, that an army force had arrested Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok, after he refused to support what he called a “coup”.

The said ministry did not mention any other details in this regard, while no comment was issued by the Sudanese army until 08:55 (GMT).

Well-informed political sources reported to Anadolu Agency at dawn on Monday that the authorities had placed Hamdok under house arrest and reinforced the security system around him.

Other sources also said that the head of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, was planning to speak later Monday on the latest developments in the country, without giving further details.

Monday at dawn of the ministers of the transitional government and the leaders of the “Forces for Freedom and Change” (the civilian component of the ruling coalition) and political formations of the “Socialist Party of the Arab Resurrection”, “Democratic Unionist Party” and the “Sudanese National Congress” were arrested in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.
