Elisa Aguilar (Madrid, 47 years old) was re-elected this Tuesday as president of the Spanish Basketball Federation for the next Olympic cycle, from 2024 to 2028, after being the only candidate who has presented herself for the position. Aguilar was elected federative president on October 2, replacing Jorge Garbajosa, who resigned to become the director of FIBA Europe. The former player, the first woman to head the Spanish Basketball Federation, resigned last Friday to run again in the elections, and now she assumes command in the next Olympic cycle.
In a recent interview with Morning Express, Aguilar announced that Sergio Scariolo will continue during this period at the head of the senior men’s team, which will seek qualification for the Paris Games in the pre-Olympic tournament that takes place in Valencia from July 2 to 7. And he showed his desire for Rudy Fernández to be the Spanish flag bearer, since he aspires to become the only basketball player in six Olympic events. The president also stated that her idea is to also renew Miguel Méndez’s contract as head of the women’s team until 2028. One of the great achievements of recent months has been precisely the signing of the collective agreement for women’s basketball.
Elisa Aguilar is the twelfth person in the position in the 100 years of history of the Federation, after Fidel Bricall (1923-1935), Gonzalo Aguirre (1935-1940), Pedro Conde (1940-1941), Emilio Sánchez Corona (1941- 1947), General Jesús Querejeta (1947-1966), Anselmo López (1966-1971), Enrique Menor (1971-1972), Ernesto Segura de Luna (1972-1984 and 1991-2004), Pere Sust (1984-1991), José Luis Sáez (2004-2016) and Jorge Garbajosa (2016-2023).
