Earthquake in Haiti: Prime Minister declares state of emergency

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced on Saturday that he had declared a state of emergency following the earthquake that hit the coasts of the country, causing significant loss of life and material damage.

Henry added, in a tweet, “We will take the necessary steps to help those affected. We must show great solidarity. The government has declared a state of emergency. We will act quickly.”

He stressed that “the earthquake, which occurred around 8:30 am local time (12:30 GMT), significantly affected the southern provinces, Grand Anse and Nebes”.

In a previous tweet, the Haitian Prime Minister confirmed that the 7.2 magnitude earthquake caused loss of life and heavy material damage in several regions of the country.

Henry tweeted, “I offer my condolences to the families of the victims of this violent earthquake, which caused loss of life and heavy material damage in several parts of the country.”

In this regard, the Department of Civil Defense said in a statement that “the devastating earthquake killed at least 29 people and caused severe damage,” according to the US Agency “Associated Press “(AP).

Earlier today, the United States Institute for Geological Studies (USGS) said a magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred 12 km northeast of the city of St. John’s. South in Haiti.

The earthquake was felt in the capital, Port-au-Prince, causing panic among citizens.

According to the American Institute, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km below the earth’s surface, warning of a tsunami that would occur as a result of the earthquake.
