Competing on the Jalan Besar artificial field, the Vietnamese team was deadlocked throughout the official competition. However, entering extra time, two goals from Tien Linh (90+11 minutes) and Xuan Son (90+14 minutes) helped coach Kim Sang-sik and his team win 2-0. This is a great advantage of the “Golden Star Warriors” when the semi-final second leg of the Vietnamese team is played at Viet Tri’s home field (Phu Tho).
After a somewhat difficult victory against Singapore, captain Duy Manh shared: “The Vietnamese team fought resiliently, following the coaching staff’s tactics. Although there were difficult times, we overcame them. This is a worthy victory for the entire team.”
Duy Manh also determined to win the second leg to participate in the final of the 2024 AFF Cup. He expressed: “We will try to play well to achieve the goal of winning the championship like 6 years ago. It won’t be easy, but we will stay focused.”
Notably, in addition to the goal in the 90+14 minute, Xuan Son also made Vietnamese fans regret when his masterpiece was rejected. In the 84th minute, after a throw-in on the left wing, Xuan Son had good control and then turned and finished very quickly, hitting goalkeeper Manbud. However, after nearly 5 minutes of consulting VAR, the referee judged that Xuan Son let the ball touch his hand and denied the goal.
Before Xuan Son’s goal was denied, Duy Manh revealed: “I went to Xuan Son’s side and comforted him. Xuan Son had a passionate and brave match. Xuan Son told me about the rejected goal, that it was a legal tackle, the ball touched the chest, not the hands. It’s unfortunate that the referee denied the goal after consulting VAR. However, we all must respect the referee.”
After the first leg, the Vietnamese team will have about 3 days to prepare before entering the second leg, which will take place at 8:00 p.m. on December 29 at Viet Tri Stadium.
